Hello! I am a first grade teacher in Grand Blanc, Michigan. Grand Blanc is a growing community outside of Flint, Michigan. Most of the people that live in Grand Blanc work for General Motors. Flint, Michigan is the home of the automobile. The first car was made in Flint. Unfortunately, a lot of the car factories in Flint are closing and moving to other places. This has left many people without jobs. The city of Flint used to be a thriving community many years ago. Since most of the jobs have left, so did many businesses. When driving through Flint, you will see many boarded up buildings. It is very sad! Many people moved out of Flint and into the surrounding suburbs. Grand Blanc is one of those suburbs. It is summer right now and I am very anxious to be getting back to school. I miss being with my students. Right now, I have 27 students in my class for the upcoming year. I hope that you have a wonderful school year! Sincerely, Melanie Whetstone

During my search in Yahoo.com I was looking for First Grade info. to help make learning a positive and fun experience for my 6 yr. old boy. He is 200% boy, fearless and "spirited". He doesn't like school because "we never get to play!". We are already having a hard time with reading despite the fact that he is in a split Grade 1/Grade 2 class. Homework is a struggle now at such an early age and I want to get a handle on the situation now. John was not bringing home any paperwork for the first month of school until I questioned the teacher via a note. I should have acted on this earlier but wasn't quite sure if First Graders had homework in such volume. Now he is behind in learning and I can't see how we can possibly catch up. I am doing the best I can now every night to have John read his "decodable books and word lines." I am very impressed with your website and wanted to compliment you! If you have any great ideas to make learning and reading fun and exciting, I'd love to hear them! Thanks!

Many of the children have the use of a computer at home but have not had the opportunity to use it as a "Reach Out" and learn type of tool. It was also fun to compare notes as to what and how we learn is so very much the same as your first grade class all the way across the U.S. Thank you for this super organized and inspiring fun filled site. I too feel motivated to get into the "200's".

make many errors. By the way, have you ever heard of the Work Sampling Program put out by the Rebus Company which is an assessment and reporting out program involving portfolios, checklists, annotated work, observations, etc.?

I am a new teacher, just graduated in December and got hired on a grant program from the state to reduce the teacher/student ration in reading classes. I did my student teaching in 3,4,and 5 so I have very little experience with first grade. I majored in reading, but most of the classes were about content area reading for upper grades. I sort of feel lost and am just looking for some ideas and strategies/resources.

I have 5 children and 2 grandchildren. It is nice to see such great things happening from grades 1 and 2 in Washington state!! Nancy

Have a wonderful week at school

Hi, my name is Glynda Burpee and I have a 1st grader in Jackson Elementary School in Jackson, GA. I was wondering where I might find the rules for coding letters and blends to get the correct sounds when sounding out words. This would be like use of the "breve" and "macron", difference between "c" and "k" or "s" and "z". I asked my son's teacher, but she didn't have it on paper. She only had the codes and rules on the wall for teaching class. And the computers at the school are down, and she can't get online to find it for me. I would appreciate any help you could give me. Thank You!
